History

Formerly the Gwalia Packaging Group, comprising of Dragon Plastics Ltd and Gwalia Plastics Ltd. Dragon Plastics was a closure manufacturer formed back in 1968, currently a third-generation family owned company. Bottle manufacturer Gwalia Plastics Ltd, formerly Riverside Plastics, acquired by Dragon’s shareholders in summer 2007 along with AMJ Tooling.

Uniquely, Gwalia Healthcare is the only privately-owned SME in the UK to manufacture both containers and closures with equally large standard ranges. This means that customers can benefit from extremely flexible and speedy matching of closure to container, container to closure and this flexibility makes for more effective packaging.

Child resistant packaging has, since the 1980s, been one of the group’s core competencies and Gwalia holds a number of patents for its closures, all of which comply with ISO 8317, when used with suitable containers. Because of the groups enterprising culture, a number of special designs have been created and brought into production for both large and small customers-literally national supermarket groups to niche manufacturers.

Gwalia enjoys a number of accreditations and these include:  ISO 13485 for the entire facility (Issued by TUV) and BRCGS global standard for Packaging Materials and Food Safety.
Gwalia (as Dragon Plastics) was a founding member of the Child Safe Packaging Group.

The end of 2015 saw the start of a new era for Gwalia Packaging Group and our two divisions Dragon Plastics and Gwalia Plastics, closure and container manufacturers respectively. The two member companies were merged to form Gwalia Healthcare Ltd. to capitalise on our expertise and enviable reputation in serving the European Healthcare Market since our foundation in 1968. Gwalia Healthcare will continue to operate from our ISO:13485 accredited manufacturing campus in Pontypridd, South Wales where we are progressing a number of interesting capital development projects.

Chief among these is the installation of our Dedicated R&D Suite consisting of a Class 8 injection moulding facility, with lamina flow ventilation, comprising of a totally new Fanuc 50T and 100T tonne all-electric CNC injection moulding machine. This new production suite allows for moulding of medical device components in a pollutant free atmosphere for the most demanding healthcare applications. Complementing our new cleanroom moulding area is our Class 7 antistatic cleanroom assembly suite, designed to support Tier 1 and emerging healthcare companies R&D their products in readiness for market launch.

During 2022, the company secured a second manufacturing site on Llantrisant Business Park dedicated to the contract packing of nutraceuticals.
